What is gluten? What is gluten intolerance? What is celiac disease? What ingredients contain gluten? Gluten is a protein found in wheat, oats, rye, and barley. And there is no reason anyone, including diabetics, should avoid it, unless they are gluten-intolerant. Gluten Intolerance is also called Celiac Sprue, Celiac Disease, or non-tropical sprue. These people have an inborn error of metabolism that prevents them from digesting this particular protein. It can cause gas, diarrhea, inflamed intestines, and malabsorption of nutrients. The way to tell if one is gluten-intolerant is to collect stool samples and test them. Is gluten free healthier for everyone? A gluten-free diet can have the side effect of helping you eat fresher, natural, healthy foods; less processed junk food; and fewer total calories. The benefits of which should be obvious -- better health, more energy, weight loss, and a longer life. But most people can do this without necessarily a "gluten free" diet. They just need a healthier diet. And with all the processed gluten-free substitutes now available, it is fairly easy to eat a very unhealthy, high-calorie, but gluten-free diet. (Some people believe gluten is hard for everyone to digest and that everyone would feel better and be healthier without it, but these people are on the outskirts and most doctors believe a gluten-free diet is only beneficial to those with some form of gluten sensitivity. And many people who feel this way, think that all grains, not just gluten, are a problem.) In other words, unless you are sensitive to gluten, eating gluten-free bread isn't any healthier for you than normal bread.
